The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) reported that Yucatán ranked second nationwide with the lowest rate of intentional homicides in 2023, with a total of 52 cases. This is only surpassed by Baja California Sur, which recorded 47 incidents.
According to preliminary data published by the INEGI, Yucatán has a homicide rate of just two per every 100,000 inhabitants, making it the safest state in Mexico. On the other hand, Colima has the highest rate, with 117 homicides per every 100,000 inhabitants.
In Yucatán, fraud is the most common crime, with 5,565 denunciations per every 100,000 inhabitants. Extortion and verbal threats follow closely behind, with 3,812 and 3,093 cases, respectively.
The capital city of Mérida is recognized as one of the safest cities in Mexico due to its extremely low crime rate compared to other Mexican cities. This distinction is based on national evaluations of public safety.
According to Inegi data, the states with the highest homicide rates per 100,000 people in 2023 were Colima (117), Michoacán (77), Baja California (69), Zacatecas (65), and Chihuahua (62). On the other hand, the states with the lowest crime rates were Yucatán (2), Coahuila (4), Baja California Sur (5), Durango (5), and Mexico City (7).
In terms of absolute numbers, the states with the most homicides in 2023 were Guanajuato (3,746), Mexico State (2,849), Baja California (2,642), Chihuahua (2,396), and Michoacán (1,865). On the other hand, the states with the fewest homicides were Baja California Sur (47), Yucatán (52), Durango (89), Aguascalientes (114), and Campeche (115).
The preliminary data shows that there were 31,062 homicides in Mexico between January and December 2023, resulting in a national homicide rate of 24 per every 100,000 inhabitants.
