The procession of the Virgin and her pilgrimage through the streets of the San Sebastián neighborhood in Merida marked the start of the patronal festivities, which will last until Friday, August 16
The Festivities in Honor of the Virgin of the Assumption in Mérida’s San Sebastián neighborhood are among the most deeply-rooted and cherished celebrations in Yucatán. These festivities have a rich history and are marked by a series of religious and cultural events.
The celebrations in honor of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary to heaven began today at the Parish of Saint Sebastian Martyr with a crowded participation of faithful, from the mass presided over by Father Lorenzo Mex and especially during the procession to accompany the religious image.
The descent of the Virgin and her pilgrimage through the streets of the neighborhood marked the beginning of the festival, which will feature a different group arriving at the church daily. Father Lorenzo highlighted the large influx of people, stating that it benefits not only the church but also the Barrio Mágico designation, which the neighborhood received last year.
“The August festivals give identity to the San Sebastián neighborhood,” he said, “but they also generate economic income because people come to the vaquería, dance, attend the fair, and dine.”
During her procession, the Virgin was accompanied by representatives of the participating guilds carrying their banners.
Following the 7 pm mass today, a vaquería is scheduled for 9 pm. Tomorrow, the first group to enter the parish will be the La Visitación Guild after the 11 am mass.
In this festive atmosphere, the people of San Sebastián neighborhood are eager to celebrate and honor the Virgin of the Assumption, while also promoting local commerce and tourism.
