Get to Know the Three Most Popular Ports in Progreso, Yucatán

- August 6, 2024

Local residents of Progreso stated that the municipality is more than the International Malecón, so they invited national and foreign visitors as well as local strollers to explore these holidays in the Comisaries of Chuburná, Chelem and Chicxulub Puerto, which have attractions and interesting proposals, and would help develop the economy of the inhabitants of these sites.

Chelem and Chuburná

Less than 15 minutes away and with public transportation options to access the beaches, they both Chelem and Chuburná have traditional fairs installed in the main squares during this vacation season; as well as various sports and cultural shows on weekends for the enjoyment of people.

Chuburná has its own dock, where one can practice sport fishing, as well as the Isla de los columpios (Swings Island) attraction, and even kayak rides through mangroves and ciénegas to observe the rich biodiversity of the area. Locals also suggested visiting the coast by boat and exploring the dunes, assuring that in the surroundings of the locality food and drinks can be obtained at more affordable prices than in Progreso.

Residents pointed out that between Chelem and Chuburná there are accommodations from 300 pesos, so you can save money, as they stated that a family can spend around 600 pesos per day with everything and food, an amount that would double or triple in the most touristy part of Progreso, which is the Malecón.

Chicxulub Puerto

As for Chicxulub Puerto, besides being famous for being the epicenter of the same-named crater, locals indicated that visiting their market is unforgettable, as it’s affordable and you can find seasonal fruits, fresh food prepared on site, and handcrafts.

In addition, it has one of the main attractions of the municipality: the Jurassic Trail, which is open to the public and is a unique attraction that can be visited from Monday to Sunday, from 4 pm to 11 pm.

The Jurassic Trail in Chicxulub Puerto transports you back to the time of dinosaurs, with life-size figures and robotic movements of species like velociraptors, brachiosaurs, triceratops, and T-Rex. This makes it a fascinating experience for visitors.

Visitors should know that while the Malecón is beautiful, there are many things to explore and do in Progreso as well as supporting local economy.
