Record-Breaking Summer in Progreso: Economic Impact Surpasses Expectations

- August 7, 2024

As the sweltering summer heat beckons tourists to cool off in the sea, the town of Progreso has seen a surge in tourism, exceeding expectations and setting a new record for economic impact.

According to Manuel Contreras Alcalá, president of Canaco Servytur, revenues have already surpassed 500 million pesos, with initial estimates suggesting 530 million pesos by the end of the season. The influx of tourists, both locals and foreigners, has been unprecedented, with peak hours witnessing an average of 45 vehicles per minute accessing the port.

Additionally, “Poseidón” attracts dozens of tourists.

The town’s commercial sector is thriving, with hotel occupancy at 100% capacity, Airbnb spaces scarce, and restaurants bustling with customers, often resulting in waiting times of up to 20 minutes. Small businesses, such as convenience stores, bakeries, and tortilla shops, have seen significant increases in profits.

Contreras Alcalá attributes the success of this summer season to favorable weather conditions and the arrival of cruise ships, including the Carnival Breeze, which has positively impacted the local economy. With good weather forecasted for the remainder of the season, it is likely that the economic impact will continue to grow, meeting the goals set by Progreso’s merchants and entrepreneurs.

The town’s tourism sector appears to be on track to surpass last year’s numbers, with an initial estimate of 350,000 visitors expected. However, with current trends indicating a significant increase in tourist activity, it is possible that this target may be exceeded. As the summer season continues, Progreso’s economy is set to reap the benefits of its thriving tourism industry.
