Contrary to its usual image, San Juan Park appeared nearly empty and without the usual bustle of music from the food stalls installed there.
The reason is the work for the “Illuminate San Juan” project announced by Mérida’s mayor, Cecilia Patrón Laviada, in a press conference on Monday.
According to her, the project will materialize on Sunday the 20th, with the aim of “bringing it to life,” something that, she said, has not happened in this area in recent years.
She mentioned that monumental figures, 2 and 4 meters tall, will be installed in the park. Parts of these figures were seen tonight in the planters, still packaged.
The areas where they were placed were cordoned off to prevent curious onlookers from approaching, and they remain there awaiting the installation personnel.
The figures represent the various ways Day of the Dead is celebrated in different parts of the country, the mayor informed.
Additionally, a crew of municipal Public Services workers, along with heavy machinery, began cleaning and unclogging the park’s drainage grates. Well perforations were also carried out.
This did not go unnoticed by people who usually board their buses in that area.
Of all the stalls that are usually set up around the park, only one was seen on the side of the park on 64th Street.
City Hall workers carried out the tasks around the church in this well-known neighborhood.
