The Mérida City Hall has conducted a certification course to professionalize nearly 30 public servants in evaluating dog welfare. Participants included qualifying judges, staff from the Animal Protection Unit (UPA), and the Municipal Animal Care Center (CEMAA).
This certification is endorsed by the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) through the CONOCER platform. The initiative aims to enhance the work of municipal staff responsible for protecting and ensuring the welfare of all animals in the community.
Raúl Escalante Aguilar, Director of the Municipal Environment and Animal Welfare Unit, emphasized that animal welfare is a growing concern in society and a priority for Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada and her administration. They are working under a new vision to comprehensively address issues related to fauna in the municipality.
A key innovation of this program is the inclusion of qualifying judges who will collaborate with the UPA to effectively apply fines and sanctions to those who mistreat animals or fail to comply with the current Regulations for the Protection of Fauna in Mérida.
