Danger Lurks on Mérida’s Roads: 5 Intersections to Avoid

Mérida, Yucatán’s capital city, has been identified as a hotbed of traffic accidents, with several intersections ranking among the country’s most treacherous roads.

According to data compiled by Mission Zero, an initiative aimed at reducing traffic deaths and serious injuries nationwide, Mérida is home to five critical intersections that pose significant risks to drivers. The findings were part of the Road Accident Analysis in Mexico report, which was developed using data from AXA insurance company for the 2015-2023 period.

The study analyzed road accident rates in 76 cities across all 32 Mexican states and identified the top five most hazardous intersections in each municipality. Mérida and Valladolid were the two Yucatán cities included in the analysis, with three of the city’s critical points ranking among the country’s 100 most dangerous intersections.

The Mission Zero initiative has made its data available on an Open Data platform, where users can access heat maps that provide detailed information about accident hotspots and offer valuable insights for prevention. The platform allows users to interact with quadrant-based data, which indicates the number of accidents recorded in each area.

Mérida’s most hazardous intersections are:

1.  Anillo Periférico and Jacinto Canek Avenue: This intersection is the city’s most treacherous road environment, with a staggering 213 incidents over an eight-year period.

2.  Anillo Periférico and Yucatán Avenue: With 185 accidents recorded during the same timeframe, this intersection ranks as Mérida’s second-most hazardous spot.

3.  33rd Street and 31st Diagonal Street (Chichi Suárez police station): This intersection takes the 87th position nationally, with 173 accidents attributed to it over eight years.

4.  Anillo Periférico and García Lavín Avenue: Although not ranked among the top 100 most hazardous intersections in Mexico, this spot is still considered a high-risk area in Mérida.

5.  Paseo de Montejo and Pérez Ponce Avenues: Rounding out the top five, this intersection also requires caution from drivers.

These findings underscore the need for increased vigilance on Mérida’s roads and highlight the importance of implementing effective measures to prevent accidents and improve road safety in the city.
