Las Americas Residents Fume Over Prolonged Electricity Outages

Residents of Mérida’s Las Américas neighborhood are growing increasingly frustrated with the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) over persistent power outages that have plagued their community for months.

The blackouts, which occur daily and can last anywhere from a few hours to 14 hours, have left residents without access to necessities like electricity, clean drinking water, and even food. The situation has become so dire that many are now demanding answers from the CFE.

In a signed letter addressed to the CFE, residents expressed their deep discontent with the ongoing power outages, stating that “this electricity situation is now unsustainable: The root problem has not been resolved, and the ‘letters’ and ‘commitments’ they deliver are a fallacy. From the CFE.”

The residents also highlighted the impact of the blackouts on their daily lives, including damage to appliances, spoiled food, and even physical, mental, and emotional health problems. They emphasized that “the constant interruptions go beyond mere inconvenience. They damage our appliances, spoil our food, and during very hot seasons, leave us without water, a basic necessity for life.”

In addition to demanding a detailed explanation of the frequent failures and a solution with measurable results, residents are calling on the CFE to improve its service and provide reliable electricity. As one resident noted, “We’re fed up! The grid capacity is insufficient.” Another testified that they have been paying high prices for poor service and that the situation has become unbearable.

The lack of effective solutions from the CFE has led residents to take matters into their own hands by creating a petition on Change.org to demand better electricity service. The petition, which can be accessed through the following link:   https://www.change.org/p/exigir-a-cfe-una-mejora-en-el-servicio-el%C3%A9ctrico-en-nuestro-fraccionamiento-las-am%C3%A9ricas , aims to bring attention to the issue and pressure the CFE into providing a more reliable service.

The residents of Las Américas are not alone in their frustration. Many Mérida residents have been affected by the blackouts, which have become a regular occurrence in recent months. The situation is further complicated by the fact that many areas of the city are experiencing water shortages due to the lack of electricity.

As one resident noted, “You pay punctually and dearly for terrible service because they continue to authorize more urban growth when they don’t have the capacity to handle it.” Another echoed this sentiment, stating that the blackouts cause damage not only to appliances but also to health, both physically and mentally.

The residents of Las Américas are demanding a real solution to their electricity problems. They want reliable power, clean drinking water, and an end to the constant disruptions to their daily lives. As they say, “A true solution is imperative.”
