Teachers in Yucatán demand the removal of the General Secretary of Section 33 of the SNTE.

- June 24, 2024

The General Secretary of Section 33 of the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE) has not attended meetings.

Yucatán teachers stated that BJ González, the General Secretary of Section 33 of the SNTE, does not defend the interests of the workers. Regional representatives of Section 33 are urging the national representation to convene an extraordinary assembly and remove the General Secretary, BJ Emanuel González Chávez, because he is not advocating for the workers’ interests.

Once again, teachers gathered at their facilities located in the Yucalpetén neighborhood in Mérida to seek dialogue with the secretary so that he listens to their demands. However, once again, they were not received.

On this occasion, they approached the technical secretary, Giselle Yazmín Chi Centeno, to request an appointment with the secretary. However, when faced with specific questions, she evaded the teacher representatives and media without providing a clear response.

The secretary was unable to provide information on the secretary’s whereabouts, only mentioning that he had union meetings and would be attended to by a committee.

The teachers expressed frustration with the same committee, which has not responded to their requests, and this marks their fourth meeting.

During the meeting held within the facilities, the teacher representatives indicated that this situation appears to have no resolution, and therefore, they will call for the removal of the General Secretary.

It is important to note that the teachers have been in a salary dispute for several months, and it is expected to continue indefinitely.
