Recent heavy rains in Mérida have heightened the risk of roof collapses and dangers associated with old buildings, particularly in the Historic Center and other parts of the capital. Municipal authorities are urging vigilance and advising people to avoid walking near abandoned structures.
Yesterday, due to morning rainfall, the upper facade of an old mansion on Calle 57 (between 50 and 52) in the Historic Center collapsed. Police Municipal officers from Mérida (PMM) cordoned off the area to prevent further accidents, using restrictive tape to block pedestrian and vehicular access.
Other areas within the Historic Center, such as Calle 65 (with numbers 42, 44, and 46), also have abandoned properties at risk of collapse. Pedestrians should exercise caution. Notably, approximately 250 abandoned buildings have been identified in the Historic Center alone, with warnings posted on some of them, according to Gobernación Director Ignacio Gutiérrez Solís.
