How To Protect Your Air Conditioner Compressor and Tinacos from Strong Winds In Mérida

- July 2, 2024

Considering the forecasted strong winds caused by Tropical Storm Beryl in Yucatán, Roberto Chacón, a plumbing and air conditioning expert, offered some recommendations to prevent air conditioner compressors on roofs and tinacos from being blown away.

As the Yucatán Civil Protection Agency (PROCIVY) predicted maximum wind speeds of up to 118 km/h, the expert advised securing the tinaco to its base if it does not have three walls for protection. He explained that those with three walls and one entrance would allow air to enter through the single entrance, round the tinaco, and exit back where it entered, making it less likely to move or be blown away.

Regarding the air conditioner compressor, Chacón recommended installing it on a cement base on the roof, commonly known as “Pollos”, as this structure allows the compressor to be screwed and secured, preventing it from being torn off or damaged during the storm. If the compressor is only sitting on the roof, he suggested disconnecting the tubes connected to the mini-split and remove the compressor from the roof, as there is a risk of the tubes being damaged by strong winds.

It would also be prudent to place a plastic lone over the compressor if it is left on the roof to minimize potential projectiles that could damage the internal fan.
