Street vendors and tourist operators perceive a decline in sales due to the remodeling of Plaza Grande.
Don Beto, a hat vendor, commented that his sales at Plaza Grande have decreased since the works began.
According to him, tourists see “destruction” and do not approach the area, preferring to go to the coastal zone to enjoy their stay in Yucatán.
To compensate for his losses, he explained, he spends more time in parks and Prolongación Paseo de Montejo.
Tour operators indicated that the construction of Plaza Grande has affected them, as they now have to “fish” for visitors who previously arrived on their own seeking tourist destinations.
They also pointed out that tourists are concentrated in Paseo de Montejo.
They considered that once the works are finished, it will benefit them because tourism will arrive in greater numbers, and the plaza will be more beautiful and attractive to locals and foreigners.
A bus driver commented that due to the works, they changed their stop and are currently located at the “Armando Manzanero” theater door, although sometimes they move stop.
Depending on which streets are closed, he said, the entrances have decreased almost by 50%.
