Despite environmental laws against the hunting of jaguars, which are endangered animals, poachers continue to kill them. A video shared on social media shows a person skinning and de-skinning a jaguar at a meat market.
The footage shows a man removing the skin and claws from the animal. The person responsible for the slaughter claims it was done out of “vengeance” because the jaguar had killed livestock.
No Investigation Launched
Despite the public outcry, authorities have failed to launch an investigation into the matter. As of now, no action has been taken against those responsible.
Carnicero’s Reaction
According to a report by NotiRivieraTulum, the animal was slaughtered at a meat market where the carnicero (meat seller) can be seen in the video. It is claimed that they will consume the jaguar’s flesh.
Yucatán: Top Spot for Animal Cruelty
According to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), Yucatán ranks first in the country in terms of animal cruelty. The state has reported over 600 complaints of animal abuse since January this year, according to the State Attorney General’s Office.
New Unit Established
In February, a new unit was established to deal with animal mistreatment cases. The Specialized Unit for Domestic Animal Abuse is part of the administration’s commitment to protecting and caring for animals.
Responsibilities of the New Unit
The unit is responsible for collecting evidence and building cases against individuals who commit acts of animal cruelty. Its purpose is to encourage citizens in Yucatán to report any incidents of animal abuse that are considered crimes under state law.
