A foreign couple caused a traffic accident on this morning in downtown Mérida, after they failed to respect a stop sign.

The incident occurred when a Dutch tourist, accompanied by another foreign, was driving on Calle 34 in downtown. According to her own account, she failed to notice a stop sign at the intersection with Calle 65 because she was distracted and looking elsewhere.

As she drove into the intersection without stopping, her vehicle collided with a “Va y Ven” bus from Route Vergel III. The bus driver claimed he had no way of avoiding the accident.

The foreign tourist, who was driving the vehicle, appeared shaken by the incident.

The tourists struggled to communicate with the rental car company and their insurance provider. In order to find help, they approached people who were taking photos of the accident scene and asked if anyone spoke English. They hoped that someone could assist them in communicating with the authorities.

Fortunately, a young woman from the bus intervened on behalf of the tourists and helped facilitate communication.

Later, state police arrived at the scene and used a translation app on their phone to communicate with the foreigners.

Additionally, an ambulance from the State Police responded to the scene, where paramedics attended to the injured parties. However, none required hospitalization.

Representatives from the rental car company also arrived at the accident site to conduct any necessary investigations and procedures.
