Governor Mauricio Vila inspects Plaza Grande works in Mérida

- August 6, 2024

With the goal of renovating Plaza Grande in Mérida and fortifying the tourism vocation of the heart of the Yucatecan capital, the works of remodeling this place are being carried out. The Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal supervised these works to verify that they were progressing according to what was programmed.

During the tour, the Governor verified that the roads surrounding Plaza Grande were being adapted. A single level will be established for pedestrian and vehicular areas with the aim of facilitating movement and giving priority to pedestrians. Additionally, restrictions will be applied to reduce the flow of motor vehicles.

The Governor was accompanied by Mérida’s Mayor, Alejandro Ruz Castro, and the Director General of the Institute for Construction and Conservation of Public Works in Yucatán (INCCOPY), Virgilio Crespo Méndez.

In the presence of the Secretary of Sustainable Development (SDS), Diana Pérez Jaumá, Vila Dosal verified the progress of the project to arborize this area as part of the project to remodel Plaza Grande. The project includes planting 102 new trees and creating more areas with vegetation.

The arborization plan is being carried out gradually, including species such as ceiba, yellow and red maculís, ramón, balché, pimienta, jicarito, and oak among others. These plants were cultivated in the sun and are considered the most suitable for Plaza Grande.

The Governor also observed the work areas that include a pedestrian crossing area, a vehicular circulation area, and another mixed-use area. The remodeling includes better lighting, installation of urban furniture, as well as a safe corridor for everyone.

A total amount of 137.5 million pesos is being invested in the project.

The goal is to develop an architectural proposal that transforms the public image of Plaza Grande and provides a more friendly environment for pedestrians, improving the experience for visitors, businesses, and those who use the place.

It is essential to remember that the Tourist and Gastronomic Corridor in the Historic Center is a completed and delivered work. The project connects Plaza Grande with other important places in Mérida in a safe and accessible way for everyone, including a section on Calle 60 and another on Avenida 47.

Regarding the arborization plan, adult plants with developed roots were acquired to minimize the risk of death. A corresponding irrigation stage will be carried out so that the plants continue growing properly.

The goal is to achieve a shaded space for the enjoyment of Yucatecans and visitors at all hours of the day. The result should provide shade during the hottest times, which is the main reason for this project. It will have a positive impact on the community by providing comfort during hot days and it will be an attractive place to visit for both locals and tourists.
