The city’s residents are invited to participate in these preventive measures against dengue, Zika, and chikungunya on June 22nd and 23rd.
To prevent the proliferation of mosquitoes that transmit diseases to the population, a mosquito eradication campaign will take place from June 22nd to 23rd in Mérida and its suburbs, covering 263 colonies, 230,720 homes, 44 commissaries and neighboring colonies on the outskirts of the capital, with a coverage area of 11,536 hectares, benefiting approximately 1.37 million inhabitants.
Speaking about this event, Mauricio Sauri Vivas, head of the Yucatán State Health Secretary (SSY), explained that the southern zone will be attended to on Saturday, June 22nd, and the northern zone on Sunday, June 23rd. He added that 1,943 people will participate in these efforts using 81 operational vehicles and 340 trailers to transport containers filled with water to the sanitary landfill.
In this regard, Sauri Vivas made an appeal to the public to eliminate items such as: bottles, cans, tires, buckets, containers, and various other receptacles used by mosquitoes as reservoirs. He also emphasized the importance of not depositing old mattresses, clothes, construction materials, weeds, paper, cardboard, or newspapers.
Furthermore, he requested that the population take into consideration that the activities conclude at 3:00 PM, recommending that they avoid taking out objects after this time to avoid causing sanitation problems for their neighbors.
He recalled that the mosquito eradication campaign is part of a series of preventive measures against mosquitoes. Additionally, every week, through the Vector Control Department and with the support of vehicles equipped with machinery, a thermal fogging plan and larval control program are carried out in the colonies of Mérida and municipalities within the state.
