INAH Halts Fountain Construction in Mérida’s Plaza Grande Due to Lack of Permits

- July 24, 2024

The construction of the fountain in Mérida’s Plaza Grande has been cancelled due to lack of permits from the National Institute of History and Anthropology (INAH).

The planned fountain was part of the plaza’s renovation, but INAH approval was not obtained. Instead, the pieces will be used for the Extreme Sports Park and the Alemán neighborhood parks.

The director of Public Works at the City Hall, David Loria Magdub, explained that this project requires an additional investment of 6 million pesos to adapt it to both parks. He mentioned that INAH had initially approved the fountain as a unique element in the plaza’s center.

However, since the state government invested in installing a flagpole in the same location, the fountain’s placement had to be reconsidered. According to Loria Magdub, there will be another contract for this purpose: a fountain will be built at the intersection of the avenues where the Extreme Sports Park (Bosques de Yucalpetén) is located, allowing people to enjoy it. Additionally, he mentioned that part of the equipment from the existing fountain in the Alemán neighborhood park will be adapted and used for interactive lighting schemes.

The official also clarified that due to INAH’s reconsideration and lack of approval, there will be no interactive-luminous fountain on the Plaza Grande’s esplanade, only a 35-meter-tall flagpole in its center.
