The 2024 summer vacation season got off to a tragic start in Telchac Puerto, where two people drowned last night: one fell from the pier and the other jumped into the water to rescue them.
It was discovered that on Saturday evening, a man and a woman were at the Telchac Puerto pier when suddenly the man fell into the sea. His companion, who appeared not to know how to swim, then jumped in after him.
Eyewitnesses reported that the deceased individuals had been drinking beer on the pier since nightfall and spent hours there until the man stumbled and fell into the water. He only cried out for help a few times before his companion followed, jumping into the dark sea. The sounds of screams, cries, and then just the sound of the waves filled the air.
Eyewitnesses called the emergency hotline 9-1-1, but by the time rescue personnel arrived, they were unable to do much.
Locals who knew the sea and its currents walked along the western beach for a long time. State police officers accompanied them in their search, while other agents patrolled the area by boat until they found the bodies.
After the discovery, the site was cordoned off by municipal police. The Public Prosecutor’s Office carried out legal proceedings.
